Adam SEO Adds AEO and GEO to Our 4-Stage Framework (Effective September 2025)

Why we expanded our methodology to include Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization — and what it means for client engagements.

Today we are formally adding AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) to the Adam SEO 4-Stage 9-Step Framework. The change takes effect September 2025 across all Premium and Elite tier engagements, with Standard tier integration arriving in 2026. This post explains why we made the change, what it means for current clients, and what it does not mean.

Why Now

The honest answer is that the field finally matured enough to stop being experimental. When ChatGPT launched in late 2022, the question “should we optimize for it?” had no good answer — the system was opaque, citation behavior was inconsistent, and there was no measurement infrastructure. Three years later: ChatGPT Search exists as a product, Perplexity has a defined citation model, Google AI Overviews are reshaping CTR for informational queries, and citation-tracking tools (Profound, Otterly.ai) are good enough to give us real client visibility.

We watched 2024 closely. Several clients started seeing organic CTR drop on informational queries even as rankings stayed stable — a clear sign that AI Overviews were eating clicks. By Q2 2025 the pattern was repeatable across enough accounts that “experimental” stopped being honest. AEO was no longer a research project; it was a missing layer in our framework.

What’s Changing in the Framework

We did not add a 5th stage. AEO and GEO integrate across existing stages:

  • Stage 1 (Analysis) now includes an entity-coverage audit alongside the keyword and competitor analysis. Where do AI engines have incomplete or wrong context about your brand? That gap is the priority list.
  • Stage 2 (CRO) adds direct-answer paragraph rewrites to top-of-page content. Citation-friendly format helps both AI extraction and traditional CTR.
  • Stage 3 (SEO Optimization) expands schema scope: FAQPage, HowTo, Organization, and Person schema move from “nice to have” to “required”. Author bios with credentials become structural, not stylistic.
  • Stage 4 (Re-Engagement) adds AI-citation monitoring to the reporting dashboard. Quarterly we sample where you appear (or don’t) in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews.

What’s not changing

Traditional SEO is not going away. Organic clicks still outweigh AI citations for transactional, branded, and local queries. AEO is additive — a new layer on top of solid SEO foundations.

What This Means for Current Clients

Premium and Elite tier accounts get AEO/GEO integrated automatically at no additional cost. Standard tier accounts will see the updates roll into 2026 quarterly reviews; immediate AEO additions are available as a Premium upgrade or as a one-time AEO audit.

The reporting cadence does not change — still monthly. The dashboard adds an “AI Citations” section starting October 2025 reports.

What We Are Not Promising

A few things to be clear about, because the AEO field has too much hype:

  • No “guaranteed AI visibility” packages. Citation behavior remains imperfectly understood; anyone selling guarantees is selling fiction.
  • Measurement is partial. Tools like Profound and Otterly.ai are good but not complete. We supplement with manual sampling and report honestly about confidence levels.
  • Timeline expectations. ChatGPT and Perplexity respond within days for content edits; training-baked citations take training-cycle months. Brand-mention strategy compounds slowly.
